The Kumu's Cup

It has been a few years since our last in house tournament but this June we bring back a new competition!

The Kumu’s Cup will be a competition that highlights each facet of all our programs:

  1. MMA Workout (fitness)

  2. Grappling

  3. Striking

This will be for ALL students…from Pit Pee Wees to Adults in our MMA S & C program. Even our own Kumu’s!

In addition, The Kumu’s Cup will act as our second belt testing of the year! They won’t necessarily earn a belt if they win or lose, but rather, how they demonstrate their skills and sportsmanship.

Here are your Belt Testing Candidates expected to compete at the Kumu’s Cup:

Belt Candidates will know if they passed at the Belt Ceremony, Saturday July 6th 5pm - 10pm. This will also be our Summer Potluck / and fight viewing party!

We don’t officially test our adults anymore, though participation will definitely help us to gauge your progress if you’re ready to promote or not :)

Match ups will be formulated based on the following criteria:

  1. Weight

  2. Age

  3. Skill

Students will start with an MMA workout. Afterwards they will have ONE bout in both grappling and striking.

Bout match ups will be selected by Kumu Eric personally and be kept secret until the day of competition. The bout times and rules are as follows:

Competitors will be assigned a bout based on skill and weight, not necessarily by age or belt rank

Competitors will be assigned a bout based on skill and weight, not necessarily by age or belt rank

MMA Workout rules:

  • A workout for time

  • Clearly objective standards e.g. hand release push ups over bag punches

  • Competitors will have judges ensuring movement standards are met

Grappling rules:

  • No points

  • No slamming

  • All submissions legal

  • If time expires, there will be one overtime round to see who can escape or submit from BACK CONTROL the fastest (capped at 2 minutes for all divisions)

Striking rules:

  • No strikes above the neck permitted for ANY age group

  • No knees or elbows

  • Dirty boxing permitted for 10 seconds (no knees)

  • Take downs and 10 seconds ground and pound permitted (no head strikes)

  • Warning after first infraction of rules above

  • Disqualification after second infraction of rules above

  • If a competitor is dropped with a body shot or leg kick TWICE, the bout is stopped and their opponent is declared the winner

  • If a competitor cries, the match will be stopped and the referee will ask them if they want to continue

    • Should they elect to continue, if the competitor’s actions / crying get worse, the bout will be stopped and their opponent is declared the winner

  • At the end of regulation, the referee will choose a winner based on the following criteria:

    1. Clean technique

    2. Control

    3. Accuracy

    4. Take down offense / defense

    5. Ring dictatorship = who has overall command of bout in terms of pacing and offense landed

There will be medals for each winner (sorry, we don’t believe in participation trophies) and whoever has the most wins in each division will be crowned the overall Grand Champion and be presented with the Kumu’s Cup!
